Competition Format

Competition
The competition format has several positives, starting from the spirit of sportsmanship itself.
Excitement
You only need five wins against five films, in head to head matches after the group stage. After that you are a Film Olympiad winner.
Marketing
You have a great chance to promote your film to your fans and country. ``Yeah, we are facing a film from Spain in the quarterfinals and if we qualify it will be one from India or Canada!``
Objectivity
In every phase, your film gets two new ratings, at least. This means that by the end of the finals, the winner has received more than a dozen of ratings which ensure bigger objectivity.
Transparency
A head to head match between only two films on which is better, imposes transparency.
Originality
The competition format of Film Olympiad stands out for its originality among all other film festivals and award events.

Film Olympiad and each monthly Film Olympiad Grand Prix have an innovative competition format, different to most Film Festivals.

Each competition has the following phases.

Phase 1 – Grand Prix Selection

All submitted films each month, are viewed, reviewed, rated and sorted. The top 100 (or fewer depending on submissions), are selected to the Film Olympiad Grand Prix. At the end of each Grand Prix, all films, selected or not, can read the review of their film and see their ratings on a scale 0-100.

Phase 2 – Group Stage

The 100 selected films are sorted in 20 groups of 5 films each, depending on their initial rating and seeding. The best film from each group qualifies to the knock-out stage. 12 second or third best rated films, also qualify.

Phase 3 – Knockout Stage

32 films enter a single elimination knock-out. Films are again paired in the knockout bracket according to their Group Stage ratings. There are five knock-out rounds. Top 32, Top 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Finals (determining Gold, Silver and Bronze medal for Best Film).

Phase 4 – Finals

At least 8 films per month have guaranteed screening with live audience in a venue. These films are also eligible for the Audience Gold Medal. They also qualify to the annual Film Olympiad superfinal.

Phase 5 – Film Olympiad Medals

All films who participate in the Group Stage are eligible for Film Olympiad Grand Prix medals in 30 categories (Best Directing, Screenplay, Acting categories, Technical categories, etc). In each category 6 nominees are announced and there 3 medals awarded – Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Film Olympiad Superfinal

8 quarterfinalists from each Grand Prix, including at least 8 best documentaries, animation and experimental films from the Grand Prix qualify to the annual Film Olympiad superfinal. Any remaining spots will be filled with films which had highest ratings or most Film Olympiad Grand Prix medals and nominations.

Apart from the selection stage, the annual Film Olympiad will have the same format with the Film Olympiad Grand Prix – with Group and Knockout Stages.

I mean, one half a step too late or too early and you don’t quite make it. One half second too slow, too fast and you don’t quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us. They’re in every break of the game, every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch.
